Wenceslas Christmas
We would like to invite you to a unique event. Wenceslas Christmas,
For the first time there will be a Christmas tree by the statue of Saint Wenceslas on Wenceslas square. In its close proximity there are stands with traditional Old Czech products and food. Christmas markets are her for you from 16.12. to 26.12.2011.
Also for the very first time Wenceslas square will be without hustle and noise of cars during Christmas – entry of all cars will be prevented from the 24. 12. to 26.12. between 11:00h to 22:00h.
You will also find the Bethlehem light directly on Wenceslas Square located on the central zone of the square in front of Adria Hotel Prague. Adria Hotel is taking care of the flame, therefore in case the wind blows the flame out, there is a second lamp with the Bethlehem light located directly at the hotel’s reception.
Furthermore we would like to invite you to an extraordinary evening public open-air church service. The church service will take place on Christmas Eve on Saturday 24.12. from 22:00h to 23:00h in proximity of the statue of Saint Wenceslas on Wenceslas square. The Church service will be led by s Franciscan priest Antonín Klaret Dabrowski. The Gospel and the word of the priest will be accompanied by a most famous Czech Christmas carols to the accompaniment of the organ.

Traditional Christmas tree decorated by Adria’s guests
Every year there is a traditional Christmas tree at the reception of Adria Hotel Prague. However, not even this year the tree will be decorated by a professional decorator. It has already become a nice yearly tradition that our guests help us to create the right Christmas atmosphere by helping to decorate the tree. Each guest hangs on the tree their Christmas wish written on a paper decoration. Each card is unique, some even works of art. On top of it we draw every day one room number whose residents can enjoy a real Christmas punch in the hotel bar. Our Christmas tree is already quite full of many beautiful wishes and there is still more than one week to Christmas.

Saint Nicholas and Devil - 5th December 2011
In the Czech Republic it is a tradition that St. Nicholas along with an angel steps down from the sky in the evening before the Saint Nicholas fete where they are joined by a devil. Together they walk around children – they praise the well behaved ones and upbraid the naughty ones and prompt them to a better behavior. Children then sing a song or they recite a poem to them. In return Saint Nicholas gives them sweets or toys, the naughty kids get coal or potatoes from the devil.
The figure of Saint Nicholas is not mythical. Saint Nicholas lived East in small town called Myra. Even though he was an orphan he was very generous and always thought of others first, did good, was giving to the ones in need and did many good deeds – from this comes the tradition of giving present to small children. For his generosity he became bishop.
Celebrate this nice tradition with us and join our devil and Saint Nicholas on the 5th December 2011 at hotel’s Lobby bar and taste an excellent warm drink „Devil’s breath“.
Another Prestigious Award Goes to the ADRIA Hotel
The prestigious 2011 Most Responsible Company competition has announced its winners. This independent national award for sustainable and responsible business practice is organised and presented by the Business for Society platform – a forum of responsible companies. It acknowledges the companies, which strategically and on a long term basis focus on responsible business practice, company development, reducing environmental impacts and introducing innovative solutions.
This year 60 companies and 127 corporate strategies were competing for this prestigious award and their endeavours were judged and evaluated by a panel of 25 judges. Having beaten stiff competition the winner of the main category – The 2011 Most Responsible Small Company was the Adria Hotel Prague, which according to the organisers is "a good example thanks to its participation in ecological and responsible ways of conducting business". Ing. Karel Doubek, Director of the Adria Hotel, adds; “According to our philosophy, a responsible attitude starts with each individual. The driving force of our success is the actual staff who come up with the ideas of what and where we can improve in caring for guests and our environment and put these ideas into practice, which is by far more beneficial because the employees believe in what they are doing and want to do it. I have faith in these values and as one can see my opinion was also shared by the judges and several other participating companies …”
The Adria Hotel Prague is the holder of other prestigious awards, such the “Flower” - EU Eco-Label, the 2008 Green Manager of the Year and the 2011 Hotelier of the Year.
More than One Million Steps Taken in the Adria Hotel
The European Week of Mobility and the European Day without Cars took place from Sep. 16 to Sep. 22, 2011, this year for the tenth time. The idea has remained the same – the promotion of the sustainable development and ecologically friendly means of transport in Europe. The streets are there to serve not only cars, but also pedestrians, cyclists and public transport – this is the main mission of the campaign. This year’s motto is; “Prolong your life – be active!”.
This year, the Adria Hotel in Prague, as one of the few Superior four-star hotels and the holder of the EU “Flower” Label, has actively participated in supporting this idea, organising various events with the target of addressing the wider general public thus contributing to the “transformation” of Prague roads. One of the activities was for example a competition to find the most original self-driven means of transport with the chance of winning a weekend break in the Adria Hotel or the possibility of enjoying non-alcoholic Birrel free of charge at the U Pinkasù Restaurant in Prague by those who decided to exchange their car for a bicycle during the Mobility Week.
The hotel staff did not lag behind and they themselves actively promoted this idea. Last year it was by riding bikes and this year by walking! Ing. Karel Doubek explains how this year’s involvement of employees was organised; “Each of us has measured, with the help of a pedometer, how much we walk during our normal week. Subsequently, during the European Week of Mobility we tried to increase the number of our steps by at least 30% compared with the normal situation. This activity was very successful and entertaining. Not only did we manage on aggregate to increase the number of steps by the targeted 30% and take more than a million steps, but some of us started enjoying walking as such and so will be continuing it in the future…”
The Charming Beauty of Wenceslas Square
Wenceslas Square has shown off its beauty in the city centre. On Sunday Sep. 18, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., all the cars disappeared from here and instead of the always present automobiles it was possible to see electric bikes, tightrope walkers, artists, children’s quad bikes and other entertainment, such as viewing a stalactite cave in the underground of the historical building in the Adria Hotel or the offer of special “Vlasta Burian’s” noodles at No. 26 Wenceslas Square, where Vlasta Burian’s Theatre was once founded.
The target of the organisers was to show people how beautiful and spacious Wenceslas Square really is. Those who liked the square free of cars could make for the middle part of the square and view the presentation with plans of what the square will look like after the revitalisation based on the architectural design of Cigler Marani Architects. Great attention was also focused on the exhibition of students, who were taking photos of life on Wenceslas Square.
Ing. Karel Doubek, the Adria Hotel Director and also a member of the Association of Prague New Town, which strives to make Wenceslas Square and its surroundings a better place, adds; "My dream to see Wenceslas Square without cars as a place where people want to linger and meet has come true “.

„Experience town in other way“ – COMPETITION II. Year
From the 16th to the 22nd of September will take place the European Mobility Week. The purpose of this all-European campaign is to raise awareness about more ecological and healthier modes of transport and to promote new sustainable infrastructures in the whole of Europe. Adria Hotel Prague, a holder of the EU Ecolabel „Flower“, in cooperation with an organization Auto-Mat, have decided to take part and is announcing a launch of a COMPETITION on the occasion of the European Mobility Week

Which Jam Is Better – Jam made by our grandmothers or the one made by Adria Hotel?
Each of us knows that there are probably not many delicacies better than the genuine strawberry jam made by our grannies – especially when you yourselves pick the fresh sun ripened strawberries in the open air, clean them, create a recipe and cook the sweet tasting treat yourselves … Such a strawberry bomb has been prepared for you by the Adria Hotel staff who want to ensure their guests get a really good start to the new day – an excellent breakfast.
Ing. Karel Doubek, Director of the Adria Hotel, explained how this unique “Adria” strawberry jam was born: “In the Adria Hotel we always try to surprise our guests with lovely, unique and very personal experiences, whether they are large or small. We call them personal, because we think them up ourselves and then we pool our resources and put the ideas into practice. This was also so in the case of our jam production – we spent one day together picking strawberries in special strawberry fields, then we cleaned them and prepared them using our own recipe in a way that preserves all the most important components of strawberry jam, i.e. the strawberry aroma and flavour! Now we hope our guests will enjoy eating the jam as much as we enjoyed making it for them.”
Our strawberry jam is not the only nice surprise awaiting the guests of the all-Czech Adria Hotel. For example, after their arrival guests are welcomed with a glass of water from the spring where the original settlers of the Town of Prague made their first dwellings 25 thousand years ago, guests can also find in their rooms a herb bouquet, which the staff picked themselves, and during breakfast they can enjoy the fritters of our own making or the special “Teresa’s pancakes”, made according to the recipe created for the guests by the Manageress of the Adria Hotel restaurant.
Our Employees as You Have Never Seen Them Before!
The first of June is a very significant day. It is a day devoted to our children, because since 1952 June 1st has been International Children’s Day, today celebrated in more than 145 countries around the world. Our Adria Hotel also organised a celebration for the children of our employees on this important day and prepared for them an Indian Children’s Day. Children could enjoy a lot of competitions and receive rewards for the “gold”, they won in them. Adria Hotel puts electric bikes through a demanding test
The Adria Hotel, the holder of the prestigious award – the “Flower” EU Eco-label, put electric bikes through a demanding test – hotel employees saddled up and set off to conquer the steep Petøín Hill!
Karel Doubek, the Hotel Director, explains; “Last year the Adria Hotel assumed the patronage of the “Petøínka” water spring and since the springtime arrived it was time to go together to Petøín and “unlock” our spring and prepare it for the upcoming season. Last year we walked to Petøín and carried our tools to the spring by car. This year we wanted to choose an even cleaner mode of transport and we were presented with an ideal opportunity. At that same time Prague was the venue of the Week of Electro-Mobility and therefore we decided to get first-hand experience and test one of the means of transport with alternative propulsion by going up the steep Petøín Hill. With the support of the PRE company, which is also one of the organisers of the event, we were lent 12 electric bikes of various types and so from the Vltavská underground station we set off in the direction of Petøín”.
And what does the term “electric bike”, “ebike”, or the so-called “comfortable adrenalin” actually mean? It is the newest, fastest and cheapest means of transport around the city. Admittedly, it is necessary to pedal on the ebike, but the electric drive assistance is sufficient for every slope and after the test carried out by the Adria Hotel we can say even Petøín Hill! The electric bike gives you the feeling that something is constantly pushing you forward, you ride smoothly even in steeper sections and when you reach your destination you have not even broken sweat. Not to mentioning the euphoria you feel when you are overtaking uphill a “gasping” cyclist. Karel Doubek, the Hotel Director adds; “After riding the electric bikes we had sufficient energy and strength left to “open” the “Petøínka” water spring and clear around the Petøín fountain called “At Frogs’”.
The patronage of the water spring is only one of the many activities with which the Adria Hotel attempts to contribute to its environs. The joint symbol of these activities is the “Flower” EU Eco-label, which the Adria Hotel has held for the third year running. The Adria Hotel employees make this invitation: “Why not enjoy a pleasant afternoon setting out on a walk to Petøín and visit our spring on the way”. Near the spring you can admire the unforgettable view of the whole of Prague.

Noodles on the Stage of Vlasta Burian’s Theatre
“Three Eggs in a Glass”, “Anton Spelec, Sharp-Shooter”, “Duchacek Will Fix It”, “He Stood at the Till” and “The General Inspector” – are the names of the best known films in which the king of Czech comedy Vlasta Burian excelled. On April 9, 2011 we will commemorate the 120th anniversary of his birth.
The historical premises of today’s TRITON Restaurant are the place where in 1925 Vlasta Burian’s Theatre was established, representing the most successful theatre stage of the between-war cultural activities, where we together will celebrate the anniversary of Burian’s birth and remember his favourite meal – “Czech Style Italian Noodles with Chicken, Apples and Almonds”.
Vlasta Burian was renowned for his love of good food, but despite being such a grand gourmet neither he nor his wife would cook. Interestingly, he would not cook even on screen apart from the famous cooking scene in the film “Once Upon a Time There Was a King” where with Jan Werich he threw odds and ends into a vat, always in the “adequate” quantity. Burian never actually ate much in films and only very occasionally when it was important for the story. He experienced his best “epicurean” era when he hired one of the then leading Czech chefs, master Jaromír Trejbal, whose recipe has been used by Michal Novák, top chef of the TRITON Restaurant, to prepare for you Burian’s absolutely favourite meal which you can savour in the charming area of the stalactite cave in the below-ground floor of the building at 26 Wenceslas Square, right on the very spot of Burian’s first theatre stage.

One hour without electrical energy
On Saturday 26th March 2011 at exactly 8:30pm will Adria Hotel Prague immerse for one hour into darkness. The hotel lights or electrical appliances will be completely switched off or dimmed. Only electrical appliances essential for safe operation of the hotel will stay switched on. Dining in hotel‘s TRITON Restaurant, for example, will be accompanied only by a romantic light from restaurant’s aquarium, the hotel’s reception and other parts of the hotel, on the other hand, will be immersed into darkness with just a candlelight glow.
Adria Hotel Prague will show its support to the global project Earth Hour already third time around. The project is an initiative sponsored by WWF (the World Wildlife Fund), whose message is to draw attention to negative effects of humans on the environment. It is a symbolical turn off public lighting, switch off vista points, lighting of buildings or households. Ten quarters in the Czech Republic and several thousands of individuals have already registered to take part in the project. Karel Doubek, Adria’s Hotel Prague general manager throws in, “this simple, but significant act – turn off lights – is prove that every one of us can take part”.
„Do you already know what you will be doing at that time? How about engaging in the Earth Hour project with us”, encourages all Karel Doubek.

Culinary Symphony of Two Masters of Czech Gastronomy in the Renowned TRITON
Two masters of the culinary art joined forces to create a truly exceptional tasting menu, which will bring joy to the heart of every gourmet. You can experience this unrepeatable gastronomic symphony under the baton of Michal Novák and Vladimír Šmejkal from Mar. 23, to 27, 2011 in the remarkable premises of the renowned TRITON Restaurant – a stalactite cave directly on Wenceslas Square.
The mastery of both experts, who share one kitchen, suggests that you cannot let such an opportunity slip through your fingers. During the sixteen years of his career Michal Novák, today the master chef at the famous TRITON Restaurant, has gained experience not only in top quality Czech restaurants and hotels, but has also extended his skills beyond the borders of our country in competitions, short-term attachments and long-term stays – for example in Ulyanovsk - Russia, Switzerland, Denmark and Mexico. He does not like getting tied down by convention, a fact which can also be clearly seen in a menu prepared by him, boasting consummate combinations.
Vladimír Šmejkal has been engaged in a number of first-class hotels and restaurants, not just in this country but also abroad. He has worked in the Flambé restaurant, Diplomat Hotel and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he has cooked for the Spanish crown prince, and in Belgium side by side with the personal chef of the Belgian king. He likes using and expertly combining the experience gained in the kitchens he has called home in years gone by. According to Vladimír Šmejkal the enjoyment and pleasure, which his meals provide, bind his working team together – and having Mr. Šmejkal in it is a real guarantee of success.

As it had become a pleasant tradition, once again Adria Hotel organized a “Three Kings” event and once again accepting an invitation for one of Adria‘s event was a guarantee of an evening with an original idea, humor and an unusual performance. The Three Kings event took place on January 6, 2011 and from guest’s responses we believe that even this year we exceeded their expectations. And what was the theme of the event this time? Ing. Karel Doubek, general manager of Adria Hotel Prague, explains: „Last year we were all dealing with impacts of the economic crisis, therefore we decided it is time to remind ourselves we need to have fun, we need to play and most importantly we need to rejoice. This is exactly what we were doing as kids, but we forgot as adults. Experiences, laughs, fun, expectations and exceeding boarders of ordinary days – all of this and much more can be found under a big top of a circus, which one of our conference halls was transferred into with everything that goes with“.
Ringmaster, wild bear, skillful juggler, talented clown, stilt walker, fantastic tightrope walker achievements – this and much more could be seen and more importantly could be experienced first hand under the big top of circus Adria. Each guest was initiated into mystiques of circus artistry – they could learn to form balloons into various shapes from our clown, try tightrope walking or learn what juggling is all about. The most talented tight rope walker who managed to walk furthest as well as the most skilful „forming master“ who managed to form balloon into shape the most similar to our „wild bear“, won attractive prices.
Every year, thus this year also, the idea as well as the event execution from the very beginning till the very end was done by us – the Adria Hotel employees. So who was actually hiding behind the circus figures? Everything was overlooked by ringmaster Karel Doubek, the General Manager, wild bear was Roman Talman, Rooms Division Manager, strong weightlifter with the heavy bar-bell was Václav Høíbal, Sales Manager and clown who taught our guests to form various shapes from balloons was Jitka Rimell, Marketing Specialist. Elements of circus were also visible throughout the delicious gastronomy of our talented head chef, Michal Novák.
